Learning to Lead
Learning To Lead is our primary programme for year 5 and 6. We also work with students to support their transition to year 7. This is our seventh year and have been able to expand the programme so we now work with 4 primary schools in South Bristol, 3 secondary schools in South Bristol and 4 primary schools in Somerset.
98% of parents/carers said that their child had grown in confidence as a result of being on the programme.
Developing Confidence
This programme aims to develop the children’s self-worth, confidence and enable them to get fully involved in their school community as well as their local community. For the first two years of the programme we work with key stage two students on a range of activities. In Bristol this includes visits to Bristol Zoo Project, Clifton Suspension Bridge and Tobacco Factory Theatre. In Somerset our activities include Museum of Somerset, Wookey Hole and workshops with the Bluebird Theatre Company. We aim to support children and families in their transition to year 7 and continue activities including artist led workshops and catamaran canoeing on the harbour.
Head of year 7:
The programme has been so beneficial for our Year 7s and their transition to secondary school. The continuity of safe, familiar and fun adults/activities have provided our young people with a sense of belonging in accordance with our school values. They have been seen to excel in ways we haven’t seen in the classroom and put themselves out of their comfort zones, trying new things and engaging with different young people. The off-site activities allow our young people to gain a further sense of independence that naturally comes with starting secondary school, once again allowing them to thrive and have fun!

‘Both my children have really enjoyed being a part of this programme! The programme started at a time when they both needed motivation because of difficult situations. I would highly recommend funding for this programme, it is invaluable! The children have enjoyed the break from the norm, going to places, learning new things and generally building on themselves and seeing what they could be and do in the future! Again, it has come at a much-needed time for the children and myself and has been a much needed breath of fresh air.’ Parent

“It made me more confident, as I knew I didn’t have to be afraid to be myself in this group.” Student
“It made me have better behaviour, it has made me want to make friends and it helped with mental health. We were very lucky to do this for 3 years – the best trip was canoeing.” Student
“The programme allowed students to feel seen and heard and parents responded well to knowing their child was getting the additional support. One parent- who had been refusing to send him in and was risking him being ‘persistently absent’ – changed her mind when we contacted her about organising a trip. She met with our attendance lead, and we got him back into school. Another student had huge behaviour issues at the start and did not deal well with the transition to secondary. The trips allowed her to bond with other students and staff and now she is in every lesson, no suspensions and rapidly improving attendance.” Head of Year 7 at Merchants’ Academy
“The programme is extremely valuable to our young people. They feel pride being part of something & it is clearly helping their leadership potential. They feel valued and have a strong sense of TEAM. Christine and the wider team are incredible and are skilled at helping the children achieve their potential and aim high!” Deputy Head, Hareclive E-Act Academy
