Green Futures

The Green Futures & Green Skills programmes are funded by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority as part of their Green Futures Project Green Futures Project – West of England Combined Authority. We work with 375 young people across the two programmes, in 18 schools in Bristol, Bath & Northeast Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. All activities include a strong focus on ‘green’ jobs and skills. Young people are supported to develop some of the essential skills highlighted by employers, through workplace visits and employer interactions. The Green Futures programme also includes an Environmental Day – putting skills into action – and a university campus visit.

Green Skills in Action

Central to the programme, business partners will be asked to provide industry-related activities that allow participants to develop relevant experience and insight into green skills, and how they are integrated in the workplace. At the end of the programme, participants will reflect on their learning by creating a presentation or resource that can be shared with peers and the wider school community.

Partnership Working Case Study

The global challenge to meet NetZero has inspired the Green Futures programme to bring together the expertise of both typically ‘green’ businesses, and those who are keen to invest in green skills and initiatives for their future workforce.

We have had an incredible response from business partners this year, welcoming partnerships with SPARKS Bristol, Watershed Bristol, Balfour Beatty, DETI & the Department of Architecture and Environment at UWE, Burges Salmon, City Hall & the Bristol WORKS team, and PYTCH. We have also had volunteer support from Climate Fresk, Babcock, FNC, Wardell Amstrong, DNV, ISG Construction, Airbus, Boeing, Atkins Realis, Babbasa, Bristol City Leap, Graphic Science, Farrans, and Wessex Water. The level of engagement from these supporters highlights the rapidly growing concern with the need for green skills in the younger generation and it has been great to show our young people the wide range of jobs they might be able to do in their ‘green’ future.
